Philadelphia – Drexel battled to a tight 1-0 loss against the James Madison Dukes on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon match at Vidas Field. The Dukes' CJ Sapong, the leading scorer in the CAA, scored the only goal of the match after connecting with a corner kick from Billy Swetra early in the first half. The loss drops Drexel's overall record to 5-8-1 (1-6-1 CAA) and improves the Dukes' mark to 8-4-2 (3-3-1 CAA).
James Madison edged Drexel in shots 11-8, but the Dragons held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Drexel's Tres Heffron made one save in goal while the Dukes' Ken Manahan stopped five to earn the shutout.
James Madison put in the only goal of the match in the 19th minute when the CAA's leading scorer CJ Sapong chested in a corner kick served up by Billy Swetra to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
Drexel's best scoring chance of the first half came in the 26th minute when Fabio Assumpcao threaded a pass to Cole Feffer on break. Feffer took two touches in the box and shot to the right side. But a charging Ken Manahan dove to get a hand on it and deflect the offering just wide of the right post.
James Madison took it's 1-0 lead into the locker room, holding a 7-5 advantage in shots. The Dragons put three shots on goal to the Dukes' two, but keeper Ken Manahan was equal to the test in the opening stanza.
Drexel would outcorner James Madison 4-1 in the second half but the two shots the Dragons leveled on goal were both seized by Manahan.
The Dragons next host George Mason on Tuesday, Oct 27 in a 7:00 p.m. match at Vidas Field.
